My focus is on the early Vietnam period when my dad was in the Army. This is the time when most Americans didn’t know much about what was going on over there. During World War II, the German Army used armored fighting vehicles to serve in all roles in the combat areas, ranging from tanks, to supply carriers to self-propelled guns. One of the most important of these vehicles was a half-track known as the SdKfz 251. Dubbed the Mittlerer Schutzenpanzerwagen — medium armored personnel carrier — it was used to transport infantry into battle. Fitted with double rear doors to allow rapid deployment, this was a true armored personnel carrier, and such was the versatility of its design that it was developed into 25 other roles, including radio carrier, mortar platform and ammunition carrier. The calendar may have said it was the first Saturday of spring, but the snow on the ground and cold in the air had the feel of winter. The campaign to liberate Europe and “defeat Germany first”, as agreed between President Roosevelt and the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the Arcadia Conference in December 1941, was launched on June 6, 1944. Given the codename of “Operation Overlord”, it has come to be known simply as D-Day. The operation was to last until August 30 and began the process of freeing Europe from the Nazi yoke after four years of oppressive occupation. As the fighting moved further eastwards, the liberated areas were littered with the debris of battles.
