W.V. Bridges named after MOH hero Spurrier PRINCETON, W.V.— Two Mercer County highway bridges have been dedicated to World War II Medal of Honor hero James Ira “Junior” Spurrier. A dedication ceremony was held June 5 at the West Virginia Department of Highways District 10 headquarters, renaming both the southbound and northbound East River bridges on I-77 the “U.S. Army Staff Sgt. James Ira “Junior” Spurrier Memorial Bridge.” Spurrier was living in the city of Bluefield when he joined the Army in 1940. He was sent to the Pacific Theater in 1942 and wounded in both hands while fighting in New Guinea. Even after almost 80 years after the annihilation of the Third Reich, the public display of a swastika in much of the world is met with brutal criticism, and even outright violence by those who object to the “Hakenkreuz” (hooked cross), and what it stood for. But in truth, the swastika existed many millennia before Hitler and the NSDAP; even long before Germany itself was a country within the European continent. The oldest swastika-like form found to date was carved on a piece of ivory about 12,000 years ago in the Mezine area of Ukraine. Comedian Steven Wright famously deadpanned, “You can’t have everything. Where would you put it?” That is a fact that anyone who is a serious collector needs to remember. Likewise, even those who aren’t particularly religious should heed the commandment: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Moving past the fact that it could be read to approve of slavery and that few of us like have pack animals, the fact remains, that we shouldn’t covet those things that belong to our friends and neighbors.
