Much to my surprise… it was MY tank… in the top photo of the article. That tank cresting the dirt mound on a tank trail at Graf is L-28 from 2nd Plt 3/2 Cav, the 2nd Platoon’s Plt Sgt’s tank. SFC Gary Anderson (Vietnam veteran) took that photo for me with my old 110 camera in the summer of 1982 at Graf. I am in the driver’s seat. When military vehicle owners and re-enactors get together to display their respective interests at a show, the result is usually a memorable experience for the visiting public. That is precisely what happened at the 2024 White Horse Military Show (WHMS) multi-period event. The show was first held in in 2022 to great acclaim, but due to severe inclement weather it was cancelled in 2023. This year’s show was held over the weekend of August 17-18 in a 30-acre field near Melksham in Wiltshire, South England. With 40 groups spanning 200 years of history from Napoleonic War to the “Cold War”, supported by lines of vehicles from motorcycles to heavyweight trucks and artillery, it was bigger and more interactive than the first show. Recently, I was reminded of a word I used to hear a lot, “Placeholder.” It was a term that was used a lot when I wrote about computer software and websites. As I would see the latest software and sites as works in progress, the term was used by marketing managers (usually British with a not quite posh accent) who would explain that the finished version would look better. “See this here, it is a placeholder. We’re going replace this and make it brilliant,” they’d almost always say. “Placeholder” was a word I heard a lot at CES, E3, Internet World, Comdex and other tech trade shows. Whenever I visit a military vehicle show I ask myself the question ahead of time: “What vehicles will be there?” Of course, the answer is military vehicles, but you don’t know for sure what type until you get on site. There are traditionally the usual tracked and wheeled vehicles, including tanks and scout cars, Jeeps and motorbikes. Then in the 1990s, or perhaps earlier, tractors and other agricultural machinery began to turn up. These showed how important these vehicles were in feeding the masses during WWII. Then I noticed emergency vehicles, fire, police and ambulance, were making appearances. I cannot recall the date when I first saw a first bus displayed at a show, but it did not look out of place because public transport operated during the war. Since…

AUTHOR’S NOTE: One of the articles from Ted Weber’s estate following his death was a large steel trunk containing a virtual time capsule from his 3 1/2 years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. Included in the cache were his uniforms, a few captured enemy souvenirs, over 600 personally taken photos, another 500 or so commercially sold pictures, and letters of correspondence with his friends and family. The crowning piece of the collection were his diaries: day-by-day descriptions in detail from his entry date of Jan. 7, 1942 (one month after U.S. forces were attacked, causing America’s entry into the war) through much of his time serving in the African and European theaters as a B-24 armorer.
