IT MUST BE SPRING — THE CALENDAR SAYS SO From my Minnesota perspective on top of about three feet of snow, it is difficult to think that spring is here, but according to the sun, the calendar, and the very cold robins on top of the same snow drifts, it is. And when spring occurs (in the northern half of the Nation, at least, shades of olive drab begin to peek out. You probably have some sort of routine to reawaken your historic military vehicle from its winter hibernation, but just in case, I am offering a few tips to consider before rolling out on the road for another season. The first historic military vehicle (HM)V meet of the new year, the 2019 edition of the Arizona Military Vehicle Collector’s Club (MVCC), was held on January 26-27th at Tempe Diablo Stadium near Phoenix. After moving several times over the years, it appears the meet may have found a lasting home in the stadium parking area. Access is easy due to the proximity to Interstate 10 and Sky Harbor Airport. The weather was perfect for the 28th annual show, and the number of vendors and green machines increased over previous years. The vehicle displays were wide-ranging and better than ever with representation from WWI to present. Located in western Thua Thien province, the narrow 25-mile long A Shau Valley was one a major strategic focal points during the Vietnam War. The valley was an arm of the Ho Chi Minh Trail the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) used to funnel troops and supplies toward Hué and Danang. A major NVA staging area known as Base Area 611 was located at the the north end of the valley. Because of its strategic value in the North Vietnamese plan for victory, the A Shau became a major battle ground from the earliest days of the American involvement in South Vietnam.…

TENNESSEE BILL TO EXEMPT HMV PLATES Legislation (H.B. 149) has been introduced that would exempt historic military vehicles from the requirement to display license plates. Currently, “historic military vehicles” includes vehicles and trailers twenty-five years or older that were manufactured for use in any country’s military forces and maintained to represent the vehicle’s military design and markings. The bill currently awaits consideration in the House Transportation Committee. NEBRASKA TITLING BILL SIGNED INTO LAW With Governor Pete Ricketts’s signature, legislation (L.B. 156) allowing for the titling and registration of former military vehicles became law. The new law defines a former military vehicle as a vehicle that was manufactured for use in any country’s military forces and is maintained to accurately represent its military design and markings, regardless of the vehicles size…

My Grandfather, Douglas Eric Balding CSM, 396 Coy, Royal Army Service Corps (RASC), died in January 2014. He was 95. As a kid, I always enjoyed his humorous — and often tall — tales from WWII. As I grew older, I pressed him more and more on actual details and facts, even though he seemed less willing to talk about his real experiences. On reaching my 40th birthday, he gave me a thick brown folder. It contained his army service records. Of course, had I many questions regarding some of the information in the records. Over the next couple of years, he did talk about his time in pre-war Palestine and Egypt. He also told me about his recollection of his short time in France in 1940 and his evacuation…

As Snoopy might have written, “It was a dark and stormy night,” and I was driving a 1947 Ford ex-Railway Express Agency 2-ton truck on a lonely mountain road. While attempting a double-clutch from fourth to third to spare the brakes on a steep downgrade, the shift lever came out of the transmission! I found myself holding the lever while rapidly gaining speed in neutral. I did what seemed logical: I stuck the lever back in the hole and completed my down-shift. As soon as I was able to stop, I found the shift lever retainer cap had come loose, so I screwed it down tight and finished the trip without further adventure. INFORMATION, INFORMATION I bought a Kaiser M715. Can you tell me something about the engine? I’m not sure what you want to know, but here’s some data: The Tornado 230 cid in-line 6 cylinder engine uses a cast-iron block and cylinder head with overhead valves and an overhead cam. The Tornado is the only Kaiser-built engine to be used in Jeeps. (The four-cylinder L-head and F-head engines, and the 6 cylinder L-head were Willys’ designs.)
