GETTING UNSTUCK THE HARD WAY While scanning through an old army engineering handbook, I came across a topic that I had long forgotten about. It is a method of extracting a vehicle wheel stuck in a hole. It works very well, is easy to do, and doesn’t require a lot of time. After acquiring my first jeep (an M38) at age sixteen, I drove it all over California, from Eureka in the north to Death Valley in the south. With the Jeep’s design having been standardized as that of the Willys MB, a second source of supply was sought. Ford was licensed to build copies of the Willys design, to which Ford assigned its model designation GPW, with “G” meaning it was a government contract vehicle, “P” indicating it was an 80-inch wheelbase reconnaissance car, and “W” referring to the Willys-design engine. The first 25,808 MBs had what is now known as a “slat grille.” This was a welded assembly of heavy bar stock. A bridge near Mühlstetten, West Germany, collapsed under the weight of a U.S. Army tank army on 5 September 1962. Though 30 tanks had passed over the bridge before, number 31 fell through and was recovered only after much difficulty. Nobody suffered injury. The Military Technology Museum of New Jersey (MTMNJ) has one of the largest and rarest collections of World War II and Cold War-era military vehicles in the world. Museum founder Dan Janquitto and his son, Luke, who serves as curator, have amassed more than 1,000 items that make up the museum. MTMNJ is located on the grounds of Camp Evans, which was the former Fort Monmouth top secret radio testing facility. It is now run by InfoAge — Science History Learning Center and Museum. Decoding Condition There are almost infinite variations of vehicles, even of the same model. The pricing shown in this update represents current market trends for typical examples of the vehicle. Like any collectible vehicle, the price of any historic military vehicle (HMV) is based on a combination of three factors: Condition, rarity, and popularity. A vehicle can be rare but if it isn’t interesting, it won’t be as valuable as an equally uncommon, popular vehicle. Rarity is determined by two factors: Production quantity and survivability. The rarity of vehicles in this guide are rated on a scale of 1 through 5 (1 being the most common and 5 the scarcest). “Rare,” however, doesn’t always mean “valuable.” It has to be desirable, as well.
