HALFTRACKS From Europe

While half-track vehicles are fairly rare these days, and many Historic Military Vehicle enthusiasts in the United States are mainly familiar with the White, Autocar and International Harvester machines, half-tracks were manufactured in many countries and used by their armed forces during World War II. There were hundreds of different types and variants, both armored and soft-skin, with Germany and the Soviet Union predominating in the number of half-track vehicles, while the U.S. Military settled for the three basic types mentioned above, along with some variants. Only the British Military had fewer half-track vehicles of their own design and manufacture, seeming to instead prefer their full-tracked Universal Carrier as well as employing U.S.-supplied half-tracks. A Red Arrow Willys

Reader RIDES Growing up in north central Wisconsin was made much better by having access to military vehicles because of my dad’s position with the Wisconsin Army National Guard unit in Medford. As company commander, he would spend an occasional Saturday morning at the armory completing paperwork. While he worked, my brother and I would climb on and through green machines parked in the “pen”. The pen was a chain link enclosure where the company’s vehicles were stored and included jeeps, deuce-and-a-halfs, 3/4-tons, a front end loader, and grader (at that time they were a Combat Engineer unit). Harley-Davidson WLA During World War II, both the Allies and the Axis nations used thousands of motorcycles. Although the advent of the Jeep significantly reduced the role of the motorcycle in U.S. military strategy, both Harley-Davidson and Indian produced numerous models of motorcycles for military use. Harley-Davidson had built motorcycles for the military since World War I, and the famed World War II-era WLA was simply the latest in a long series of government sales. Today, it is the Harley-Davidson WLA that most often comes to mind when the term “Army motorcycle” is heard. These bikes were based on Harley’s civilian model WL, modified with the addition of military items. Carter remembered for groundbreaking changes

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, who opened combat jobs to women and ended a ban on transgender people serving in the military, died Oct. 24 at the age 68 after suffering a heart attack in Boston, his family said in a statement. Known as a defense thinker and strategist, Carter was a nuclear expert, three-time Pentagon executive, budget guru and academician who had served as a defense civilian in the building over a period of 35 years. Gen. Martin Dempsey, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, noted at Carter’s retirement ceremony in 2017 that his focus on the less glamourous aspects of the job such as people management had made him known as the “most important, least known figure in Washington.” Carter had not previously…

The mid-1970s was a time when some terrific war movies were released in the cinema, such as the 1977 blockbuster “A Bridge Too Far”, based on the actual “Operation Market Garden”, with a stellar cast that included Robert Redford and James Caan. Inspired by the book of the same name by the historian Cornelius Ryan, it featured great action sequences and lots of vehicles. Then there were the movies based on novels, such as “Cross of Iron” by Willi Heinrich, also appearing on screen in 1977. Another war novel to be turned into a movie around this time was “The Eagle Has Landed”, which hit the screens in 1976 and starred Robert Duval and Michael Caine. RUGGED RENAULT

In 1899, a new French motor vehicle manufacturing company was established and named after the family of the three founding Renault brothers. Very quickly they built up a reputation for quality and reliability and went on to supply the French armed forces with a range of vehicles and aircraft engines during the First World War. This association with the military continued throughout the 1920s and 1930s with Renault supplying trucks to the French army right up to the time of the outbreak of World War II in 1939. JOHN’S JOURNEYS A Convoy Road-Run into History

By the start of 1944 some 2 million American service men and women were in Britain, held in readiness for the invasion that would liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. Army units were usually stationed in the vicinity to those areas allocated as training grounds around the country, including Northern Ireland. Sometimes, these were in the grounds of large estates, such as Margam Park in Wales, where elements of the 28th US Infantry Division were based and trained. Elsewhere, in counties like Devon and Dorset camps, special facilities were established. One of these training grounds was in the area of Braunton Sands in Devon, which today is a quiet seaside resort. TECH TIPS

BEWARE OF ASBESTOS Many HMVs still have OEM clutch disks made with asbestos, which can be dangerous if particles are inhaled. It’s wise to wear a dust mask when working on the clutches of vintage vehicles because asbestos dust may have accumulated inside the clutch housing. The same warning applies to the OEM brake shoes of many historic military vehicles. DON’T GET SNAPPY Be careful when removing or installing snap rings. They have a nasty habit of flying off and can injure an eye. Whenever possible, use proper snap ring pliers. Wearing safety glasses is a good precaution. BUT IT SAYS 160 ON THE BOX The temperature rating of thermostats (160, 180, 190, etc.) indicates the temperature at which the thermostat starts to open. It does not mean that your…

The M151 series of vehicles were designed, and initially manufactured by, Ford – who referred to the vehicles as a MUTT (Military Utility Tactical Truck), but over 75,000 of these vehicles were produced by AM General in South Bend, Indiana.
