Health, or hit points, shows how much damage the player can take before they die. Your health bar is depicted with ten heart icons, each representing two health points. So, at full health, you will have 20 health points. If you get hurt, these hearts will turn black. If you only take one point of damage, one heart will turn half-black. If you lose all of your health points, then you will fall to the ground, the screen will turn red and it will read, “You died!” meaning you will have to start again at your spawn point, losing all of your items. For some, fishing is a way of relaxing in the Overworld, to take time off from adventuring and fighting, to simply slow down and take in the biome. For others, fishing is a necessity for gathering food. You can fish when in water, on land by water, sitting in a boat and even when swimming underwater. All you need to start is a fishing rod. To craft one you will need three sticks and two string. You can also find fishing rods by defeating drowned or through trading with villagers. Smoke from a campfire will rise ten blocks high. Hay bales can be placed under a campfire to turn it into a signal fire. The smoke that comes from the fire will not rise to 25 blocks high. There will be a unique XP sound every time you reach a level that is a multiple of five. You will often see cats and ocelots walk to the edge of a block but rarely fall off. You can always push these mobs over the edge but they are immune to fall damage. Shears have multiple uses. Your base is more than just somewhere to store your stuff. It is where you can safely craft, cook and prepare for upcoming adventures. It’s best to start with a basic base and then get more elaborate with your builds. You should take care when choosing the location of your base, though. It should not be in an area with trees or near caves as these provide spawning locations and defence for hostile mobs. We recommend building on an open field or our favourite, on top of a hill or mountain. The entranceway should be two blocks high, as this is the height of a wooden door. Villages are full of job site blocks – tools that allow unemployed villagers to have a profession. These blocks can be used by villagers to change their profession if the job site block that they were using is destroyed. Villagers will also approach these blocks after they’ve sold items in order to replenish their stock. You can use these blocks as much as you like – construct them for yourself or break them and then take them to use in your own base. BLAST FURNACE (ARMOURER) The blast furnace smelts ores, metals, armour and tools twice as fast a standard furnace but this cannot cook food like a normal furnace can. ALLAY Found in pillager outposts or the jail cells of woodland mansions. If the player gives an allay an item, it will follow the player and can collect any similar items that are dropped. For a constant supply of coloured wool, apply dye to a sheep and shear the mob. The sheep’s wool will grow back in the colour it was dyed to. Bats, cats and villagers can see the player even if they have the invisibility status effect. You can trap most mobs by dropping a boat in front of them. When the mob walks into the boat they will get caught inside it and cannot get out. They can still attack if you get too close, but with a leash, you can drag the boat and move the mob. These biomes feature vast flat terrain, enabling you to see any hostile mobs from a distance. There are various friendly and neutral mobs in these areas such as horses, donkeys, pigs and bats. You won’t find a range of flora in these biomes, but you can find some interesting structures and a lot of good loot. BADLANDS Found around mountains and deserts, the badlands are made up of red sand and terracotta blocks with cactus and dead bushes dotted around. BEACH The sandy areas between land and ocean are commonly populated with turtles. Buried treasure and shipwrecks can be found in this biome. DESERT The vast barren land offers up excellent visibility thanks to the lack of obstacles. This makes it easy to spot the hostile mobs that spawn here, such as husks. The End doesn’t necessarily feature biomes in the way the other two dimensions do. There is the central island that you spawn into when you enter the dimension, and the various smaller islands that surround it. But the islands do have different parts and these are sometimes referred to as the biomes of the End. END BARRENS The edge of the outer islands feature steep cliffs. There is very little here apart from endermen. END HIGHLANDS The taller parts of the outer islands, end cities and chorus trees generate at these parts. Woodland mansions can spawn with a storage room containing 42 chests - but don’t bother checking any of them because they will all be completely empty. You can respawn the Ender Dragon by placing end crystals on the four edges of the end portal. To make an end crystal you need an eye of ender, ghast tear and seven glass blocks. Collect the dragon egg before placing the crystal as once the fourth one is placed, it will disappear from the portal. When summoned, the obsidian towers will rebuild and the dragon will appear. Navigating the Nether is much harder than in any other dimension. It is clearly a level-up in terms of difficulty from exploring the Overworld. It’s not only the mobs that are dangerous in this dimension, the environment itself is trecherous. There’s fire, seas of lava and the ground can suddenly drop beneath you. But don’t fret, we have all the information you need to explore the Nether safely and get back to the Overworld with all of your shiny loot. NAVIGATING We recommend always walking in a straight line so it is easier to find your way back and it’s vitally important when walking around the nether that you take your time. Unlike Nether portals which can be created anywhere, provided you have the right materials, End portal frame blocks cannot be obtained so if you want to enter the End, you will need to find a portal. The only place these portals can be found is in strongholds. We will explain how you can find these structures and how to activate the portals inside as well as things to be careful of when exploring strongholds. Elytra is one of the rarest items in Minecraft, only available on End ships but it is also the coolest item in the game. Elytra are an equipable set of wings that allow the player to glide through the skies. Don’t be too hasty though, as like most items in Minecraft, elytra have a durability gauge that will decrease when used and need to be repaired if you wish to keep using it. OBTAINING ELYTRA As previously mentioned, elytra only generates within End ships. These structures are found at the end of End cities, making them doubly rare and hard to come across. The achievements and advancements in Minecraft range from things you will naturally do in your adventures, to challenges that test your skills as a gamer. But then there are some that are just silly or require a lot of spare time. As you explore the swamps and mangrove swamps of the Overworld you might see some creatures with mushrooms and other vegetation growing from their heads. These are the bogged, a variation of the skeleton, but it has a few secrets that make it a more deadly opponent. The bogged behave similarly to skeletons and strays, they spawn in areas with low light and will attack the player if they get within a certain range. The biggest different to skeletons, outside of their appearance, is bogged take significantly longer to reload their bows than regular skeletons do. Before the Tricky Trials update to Minecraft in 2024, the Bad Omen effect could only be gained by defeating a pillager captain. Now, when you defeat the captain they drop an ominous bottle, which gives you the status effect for 100 minutes - in real-world time, not Minecraft time. You can also get these bottles when unlocking vaults inside trial chambers. Press the Use button when the bottle is in your hand and it will be consumed, giving you the status effect. Normally, when the player consumes a potion it leaves an empty glass bottle in the player’s inventory, but with ominous bottles, the bottle is destroyed when it is consumed. Light is incredibly important in Minecraft, as it not only helps you to see things when it gets darker, but hostile creatures can only spawn in dark areas, so knowing how light works and how to source it can make your adventures much safer. Here we will be covering all of the movement methods that come natural to the player, so we won’t be covering methods such as boats, riding horses or flying. You have a range of choices in regards to how you explore the world, but it is best to know how to do this efficiently. These caverns are randomly generated and could offer some great rewards but exploring them can be time-consuming and dangerous. We will show you how to get prepared to go into Minecraft’s caves and walk out alive, with all that good loot you are looking for. GEAR UP Be prepared for more than just mining. You are going to be spending a lot of time away from your base so pack appropriately for the adventure. WEAPONS A weapon is an item that candeal more damage to a mob than if you used your bare fists. Weapons do not last forever, they have a durability value that decreases each time you hit a mob successfully. SWORDS are the best weapon to use as their damage per second is higher than others and with sweep attacks you can hit multiple enemies. With a running jump and attack you can perform a critical hit, dealing 150% damage. AXES do more damage with each hit but the time between attacks is longer, between 60% and 80% slower than swords, depending on the material. BEE Spawning inside bee nests, which grow on the trees of forests, bees will attack the player and inflict poison if they destroy the nest. Bee nests can be harvested using shears for honeycombs or use a glass bottle on it to get a honey bottle. No two dimensions work the same and each one looks distinct – from just an image you can tell which dimension you are looking at. These biomes are found in the underground of the Overworld. These often have no light source so be sure to have plenty of torches before exploring these areas. The deeper you go into these cave systems, the better ore you can mine, but you will need some good equipment to harvest the ore and survive. DEEP DARK This very dangerous biome is located deep underground below peak biomes and cherry groves. You might think that a lack of spawning mobs means the deep dark is safe, but it is covered in sculk blocks and shriekers, which call wardens to attack the player if they make noise. Before you go out to explore the wider Overworld, you need to make sure that you are prepared for everything the biomes will throw at you. Your initial spawn point will lack the most valuable ores and resources, so eventually you are going to have to adventure outwards but doing so safely is vital. If you fail to prepare for the Nether, you won’t last long at all in the dimension. When you first start to prepare, you should completely empty your inventory as every potential space is vital. Here are all the things you’ll need on your adventures. WEAPONS With all of the hostile mobs lurking in the Nether, wielding a good weapon is key. Take a couple of swords that are iron or better as well as a bow or crossbow with a full stack of arrows. Take one iron pickaxe and a diamond pickaxe; one to do most of the mining and then you can switch to diamond for the rare blocks such as obsidian that only break with that tool. BLAZE The only mob that will take damage when hit by a snowball – although we don’t know why you would be carrying these in the Nether! Blaze are only found within Nether fortresses and are the only source of blaze rods. They attack by shooting fireballs or, if you get close, they will use melee attacks. If you attack one of these, all other blaze within 48 blocks will come to its aid. CHICKEN Believe it or not, there is a slight chance that chickens can spawn within the Nether. The End is made up of floating islands, made from end stone and these can vary in size. Below these islands is an empty void, and falling into this means game over. Traversing this dimension is incredibly tough, and it doesn’t help that as soon as you enter the End, you are confronted with the Ender Dragon, Minecraft’s final boss and the toughest mob in the whole game. End portals will always teleport you to the End’s central island, where the dragon roams and there will be several obsidian pillars but you’ll need to get off this island to see what the End has to offer. Nether wastes is the most common biome in the Nether. An enderman can pick up blocks and hold them in their hands, move them around and then drop them. If they die while holding a block, it will be dropped. You cannot teleport from the Nether to the End or vice versa. You must teleport to either of these dimensions by using the correct portal in the Overworld. Every central island in the End will have ten spikes, each with an End crystal atop. Some crystals will have cages around them, which you will need to mine to destroy the crystal inside, while the other can just be shot at from a distance with a bow. Found deep underground, trial chambers offer some of the toughest challenges available in the Overworld. You could randomly stumble across this structure, or if you’re lucky enough, you could buy a trial explorer map from a journeyman cartographer. Tuff is a type of rock that was refreshed in the Minecraft 1.21 update and now it can be used to craft all kinds of blocks, similar to other materials in the game. This material has similar properties to other rock materials, but it has a slightly darker appearance. Over time, you will want your base to be made of stronger materials instead of wood or dirt, and tuff can do a pretty good job as it can withstand a lot of damage before being destroyed. A status effect is something that changes how you character behaves. It can be that you are no longer able to do something that you once could, you can do things better than before, or you might get new abilities altogether. In Minecraft there are three types of status effects: positive, negative and neutral. The player can acquire these from what you eat, where you go or other mobs can give them to you. The strength and duration of an effect depends on its level, with higher level effects commonly lasting longer and causing a stronger effect. Taking the blocks that you’ve mined and gathered and then putting them to use to either construct a settlement or to help you navigate the landscape is something you’ll do often. MOBS The term mob is short for ‘mobile entity’ and is used to describe any AI-controlled creature in Minecraft. ‘Mob’ is used for all entities in Minecraft; friendly, neutral and hostile and these can be divided into sub-categories such as animals, aquatic, monsters and undead. A mob’s spawn depends on the biome, structure and light level. Some mobs are exclusive to their biomes while others can be found in multiple environments. Most neutral and friendly mobs can be found during the day and spawn in random amounts. Hostile mobs will spawn in areas with low light such as at night, underground in caves and structures such as dungeons. There are a couple of exceptions to these rules. During the day, the Overworld is full of creatures like pigs, horses and bees that won’t harm you unless they’re provoked. Maces are the newest melee weapon in Minecraft, added in the Tricky Trials update. This weapon can be crafted by putting a breeze rod below a heavy core on a crafting grid. Thanks to its unique attack, the mace is easily the most powerful weapon in Minecraft and if used correctly, it can defeat anything in a single hit. You can do a standard attack, which deals six points of damage, the same as an iron sword. It is significantly slower than a sword though, and it is even slower than an axe, so why would you want to use this? Maces can cause a huge amount of damage if you attack while falling. BLAZE The only source of blaze rods, these mobs roam nether fortresses and will shoot three fireballs at their targets, each dealing five damage. Touching a blaze rod will cause you to take six damage per second, and this isn’t prevented by the fire resistance status effect. BOGGED These swamp creatures are more dangerous than your standard skeleton as they shoot poison arrows. They shoot arrows slower than skeletons, but the poison will deal more damage over time. BREEZE Similar to blazes, breezes are immune to all ranged damage and any projectiles fired towards it are repelled back. The vast peaks of the Overworld can be rich with ore, but it comes with great risks. Steep drops have led to many explorers finding themselves back at their respawn point, but those who navigate successfully reap the vast rewards available. BASALT DELTAS The only Nether biome to not have bastion remnants, it is composed of basalt and blackstone blocks. There are countless enderman wandering the various islands who will turn hostile if you look directly at them, and we can’t forget the massive Ender Dragon flying through the skies. WEAPONS For surviving in the End you will need your best weapons. You should have a diamond or netherite sword with the sharpness enchantment, which adds extra damage to an already-powerful weapon. While the End may not be home to range of different mobs, the ones that are found here can be some of the toughest to fight or escape. And when you’re surrounded by an endless void that will kill you if you fall in it, you need to be extra careful fleeing and fighting. Breeze are a hostile mob that only spawn inside trial chambers. You can tell which trial spawners will eject breezes as they will have chisilled tuff blocks around it. A couple of these creatures will spawn if the player enters the chamber alone, but if there are other players present, more breezes will spawn. The main reason you will want to defeat these mobs is to obtain a breeze rod. These are only dropped by breezes when killed and are an ingredient in crafting maces. Breezes are guaranteed to drop between two and four wind charges. When Minecraft 1.21 was introduced, a whole new family of copper blocks were added. To craft a block of copper you will need nine copper ingots, or you can find them chiselled copper inside trial chambers and mine them with a pickaxe. One cool feature about these blocks is that they can oxidise, meaning they will change colour over time. Some splash potions have the opposite effect when used on an undead mob. The splash potion of healing for example, will damage mobs such as skeletons and zombies and potions of harming will heal them. If you find a cartographer selling multiple maps, only purchase one. Every map a villager sells will be for the nearest monument, treasure chest or trial chamber so each map will point to the same location.
