BUILD SPECS Here we’re going to build a simple lantern design that can be used to light any area you like. We’re using netherrack, which can be found – you guessed it – in the Nether, or around the base of ruined portals in the Overworld. Our design is based on the ideas of YouTuber Spudetti, who has a great video on lamp design. This one starts with a chiselled polished blackstone block with two blackstone wall blocks placed on top. This creates the post. On top of that, you place the netherrack and surround it with blackstone stair blocks upside down. BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT… The Nether is the most hostile of Minecraft’s three dimensions. Getting there is easy: you simply build a portal frame of obsidian blocks, light the interior with a flint & steel, then step through the portal. But once you’re there you have to survive, and that’s much more difficult! Before you enter a portal, make sure you’re stocked up with armour and weapons – not to mention the portal building supplies you can use to get back if you’re lost! Food and wood are scarce and water evaporates immediately, so keep a few supplies with you too. ABOUT HORSE ARMOUR Horse armour is a special type of protective gear that can only be worn by horses. Variants of the horse, such as mules and donkeys, and even skeleton or zombie horses, cannot wear the armour – only a normal horse! There are four types of horse armour: leather, iron, golden and emerald. Note that unlike player armours, gold horse armour offers more protection than iron horse armour. It also differs from player armour in that there is no durability – a single piece of horse armour can be used forever on one horse. CAMEL BASICS The camel is a passive mob – meaning it’ll never attack you, You can only find camels in desert villages, where they’ll be roaming around near the village centre. They are only created during world generation and never respawn if killed, so the camel can be considered one of the rarest passive mobs in the game. If it weren’t for sniffers, it might be the rarest! Camels will wander aimlessly, occasionally sitting, unless attacked – in which case they’ll run away as fast as possible! A camel that is sitting cannot be moved by the player, though it will stand up eventually! One of the earliest and easiest things to do in Minecraft is to build your own farm. Once you have the basics for your first home in place, planting some simple crops can be a good idea for a few reasons. Perhaps the main one is that is that it can provide an endless supply of food, to help keep those hunger and health bars topped up in Survival mode, and also to feed any animals you’re keeping. CAMPFIRE ABOUT CAMPFIRES The campfire can be used as both a source of light and as a means to cook food. They can be lit and unlit at will, and inflict 1 damage on mobs as well as potential fire damage. Campfires emit a light level of 15 when lit. They can be extinguished by flowing water, splash water bottles or using a shovel. Rain does not affect them. OBTAINING CAMPFIRES Campfires generate in taiga and snowy taiga villages, but can only be collected with a Silk Touch enchanted tool. Mining a campfire will otherwise cause it to drop two charcoal.
