COLLECTING CHARCOAL Charcoal does not spawn naturally anywhere in the game, but it can be easily created by smelting a log, stripped log, wood or stripped wood block. PILLAGER BASICS Pillagers are a type of illager, so they have the same grey skin as vindicators and evokers (the other types), but they also carry weapons and – unlike the others – don’t just stick to woodland mansions. These guys are all over the place! Pillagers mostly carry crossbows and can shoot an unlimited number of arrows. One illager in a patrol and/or outpost will also carry an illager banner. This illager is known as the patrol leader, or outpost captain. If you successfully kill a pillager, they will drop 0–2 arrows and around one in 12 will also drop a crossbow. SPOOKY BIOMES AND MATERIALS Whatever you decide to build for your Minecraft Halloween project, it pays to take a little time to think about where you want to build it, and what materials you want to use to do it. NOTE BLOCKS! WHAT ARE NOTE BLOCKS? Note blocks can be made by crafting together eight wooden planks surrounding one pile of redstone dust on a crafting table. You can use any type of wood, in any combination! Once placed, a note block will play a sound when it is hit by a player or if it gets powered by a redstone charge. They don’t appear anywhere naturally in the Overworld other than in the incredibly dangerous ancient city structures, so it’s very difficult to get hold of one except by crafting it. BUILD SPECS You may or may not know that the paintings that are available in Minecraft can be used to conceal secret doors or entrances! We’re going to go one better than that, though. If we add a little bit of redstone trickery, we can use this feature to create a jump-scare picture that’s perfect for a haunted house build. What we’re going to do is fit a pressure plate on the floor (this could be a tripwire) that, when trodden on, will throw something through the painting at the person standing on the switch.
