Like last month, this is another slightly different Command Decision. It looks at wargaming small encounters with troops that have never experienced battle before and we are back in the American Civil War. In the US, the term “seeing the elephant” had been used since the Mexican-American War to describe the first experience of battle. On May 5, 1863, Confederate private Andrew J. It also leads nicely into the recent gaming experiences of our group. We have recently been playing a few games using my vintage Hinchliffe and Lamming 25mm Ancient Egyptians and Assyrians. One thing that made us ponder awhile was the role of chariots in our games. The usual way I have seen these represented on the tabletop was as a kind of Cavalry with wheels. There’s a scene in David Russell’s film Three Kings where – in the aftermath of the First Gulf War – an American soldier played by Mark Wahlberg sees an Iraqi soldier. The man is waving a white handkerchief, but also holding a weapon. Wahlberg is confused: he’s not sure if the war is over… he can’t tell if the man is surrendering or trying to lure him into a trap. One of his officers is trying to get sand out of his eye, while the other is confused about a map. Wahlberg calls back “Are we shooting? Are we shooting people?” His officers ignore him and Wahlberg is required to make his own decision. I think about that incident a lot. HURRY UP AND WAIT Military operations are complex events…

Yet these large engagements were not typical, nor were they the only important battles that took place in these years of war. Podcasting has been around for a few years. In fact, it’s now old enough to legally buy a pint in the pub. I’ve been doing it for over a decade and used to have to explain it to people a lot. At one point, I could’ve had “It’s like talk radio on the internet” tattooed on my forehead. But podcasting is now firmly in the mainstream. And, despite being a digital medium, podcasting has grown into a great accompaniment for our analogue hobby, too. I’m one of those folks who had a long period away from the hobby.
