Apal of mine has a pet theory about the Battle of the Bulge. He reckons there are so many games about Hitler’s last throw of the dice in the west because it’s one of the only campaigns on the western front because its where the Americans faced the Germans, who were the team to beat in the Second World War, and did so where there was a decent chance of losing. It probably doesn’t hurt that the Germans also used a lot of their Gucci equipment in the Ardennes so if you want to see Nebelwefers, Royal Tigers and all the rest of the Nazi fashion catwalk, it’s all there. This is the second of a number of articles where Paul paints some Wargames Atlantic models using the new Army Painter Fanatic Historical boxed sets which are theme appropriate. Ed. THE PREMISE The Editor sent me The Army Painter’s Historical sets to try out, so that I can paint some minis and to offer my thoughts on this release. FREEDOM! The Age of Reason from Wargames Atlantic On page 49 of this issue you’ll see an interview we did with Hudson Adams talking about what to look forward to for the next short while from Wargames Atlantic. Well – as nothing stands still in wargaming – we see that the new AWI/Revolutionary War figures he mentions there are now ready to pre-order. The British Grenadiers (5th Regiment of Foot) are 30 figures to the box for £25. In hard plastic they are armed with the Brown Bess musket, wear the bearskin cap and you can build a mix of advancing, firing, and loading poses from the five standing bodies, all with separate heads and packs (with a location lug in the figure’s backs for those). A bit of a different approach this time. For this month Mr Sutherland gives us a ‘programmed paragraph’ sort of game suitable for some solo play. Next month we transfer Omdurman to the tabletop! Ed. Our fascination with “what-ifs” is one of the driving forces that makes wargaming so attractive. Constantly, we want to see what might have happened had historical events been somewhat different. The charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman was the last time any British cavalry were involved in a full charge. I saw this game at Hammerhead earlier on in the year and was so impressed that I asked Mr Fletcher if he could tell the readership a little more about it! Ed. I became fascinated by the world of Middle-earth, through reading The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. The Milton Hundred Wargames Club ran their latest show in June of this year and the organising club did another great job. Fighting against a multi-occupancy car park with three other, simultaneous (and unrelated) events, it was superbly managed by the club members. The team – headed by David Mustill (Club Chair and show organiser) got a bigger, busier show than last year. TRADE Last year’s 27 traders and a ‘flea market’ section was 35 traders this year and door numbers were certainly up, even though it was a hot June day. GAMES Last years 31 party and demo games were up to 34 and were split pretty evenly, plus there were painting competitions and crafting areas for young gamers.
