CINEMA-VERITE It’s difficult to think about the Last of the Mohicans without picturing Daniel Day-Lewis as Hawkeye (actually Nathaniel “Natty” Bumppo) and his nemesis Magua played by Wes Studi in Michael Mann’s epic 1992 movie. In fact nearly a dozen versions of Last of the Mohicans had been shot before that, plus an eight part BBC series with the legendary Philip Madoc as Magua. Here are two scenarios based around the incidents in the book: firstly the attack on the British column and then the rescue mission to save captives taken by the Hurons. IS IT TRUE? No and yes. James Fenimore Cooper wrote the book in 1826 and it was set in 1757. The story is a dramatic historical romance and part of his Leatherstocking Tales series of books.…

As Conrad Kinch gave us a toe in the Peninsular door over the last two issues with the Battle of Grijo, I thought it a good time to push that gaetway wide open with a short series from Mr Sutherland. INTRODUCTION The Battle of Arrapha took place in July 616BC with the fledgling Neo-Babylonians under Nabopolassar giving the Neo-Assyrians a sound beating. The defeat was so complete that Nabopolassar was able to reequip his army and enlarge it from the captured weapons, chariots and horses. Ultimately, he would have the forces necessary to conquer the Assyrian Empire. DEARTH OF DETAIL That’s it. That’s about all we really know about this battle. Confusingly, there was another battle in the Madanu suburbs of Arrapha the following February. Again it was a major Assyrian defeat and they were driven back to the Little or Lower Zab River. I attended Warfare: the wargaming weekend at the Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre organised by the Wargames Association of Reading. In its fourth year at the venue Warfare runs for a two day weekend, along side demo and party games plus a very large competition section and an extensive trade show (plus a Bring and Buy). There’s lots of free parking and a cafe that is expensive but has lots of seating. Entry was £12 cash on the door and twice that if you want to come both days making it probably the most expensive show to attend (maybe a two day ticket with a discount would help as – after a packed Saturday – attendance on Sunday was about half).
