After the brothers’ success during the flying season of 1904, they put their heads together to decide what improvements could be made on their next “Flyer.” They made some significant planform modifications to solve the pitching problems. They almost doubled the size of elevator (in front) and rudder (in back) and moved them about twice the distance from the wings. They added two fixed vertical vanes (“blinkers”) between the elevators to serve as stabilizers and help prevent the Flyer’s tendency to slip or slide sideways in a turn. They adjusted the rigging to give the wings a very slight dihedral and counter the airplane’s tendency to roll. I’ve always loved airplanes. My interest has always been with scale RC models, particularly warbirds. It wasn’t long after I started building and flying RC warbirds that I was drawn to scale competition. While I was competing, I started measuring my work against other modelers and friends, and over time, I learned techniques to accomplish that “real” look. There are many ARFs on the market today that make great starting points for producing competition-worthy planes. The models shown in this article are my MiG-3 and Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (Thunderbolt), both built from the ESM ARFs (unfortunately, they are longer available). When you shoot property, you will have two different lighting situations: outside using natural light and indoors using artificial light. Each calls for a different way of shooting. INDOORS • Use a tripod or set the drone down on something to prevent camera shake. This will also allow you to use the lowest ISO so that the images will have the best quality. A slow shutter speed is fine as long as nothing is moving in the scene.• Because of the low light indoors, shoot at the widest f-stop opening. (If you are using a drone, you may not have any control over the f-stop.)• When shooting video, keep the shutter speed at double the frame per second (fps). Mark bought the jet used, made some repairs, added scale details from Spencer Scale and Strictly Scale, and repainted the entire aircraft. Navigation and landing lights are a great finishing touch for a scale model. I asked Dave’s R/C Electronics to build a set for the MR Aerodesign Pilatus Porter PC-6 I reviewed in the October 2021 issue of MAN. For some unknown reason, the Fieseler Storch is my favorite aircraft. Perhaps this goes back to when I built a 1⁄6-scale model some years ago and became a student of the prototype. The plane has somewhat of a “cult” following and, although many argue about its aesthetics, the Storch was quite an advanced design in the mid-1930s. It was “the helicopter before they had the helicopter” and many still fly today, including replicas. The Luftwaffe employed the aircraft in all theaters of WW II and it was quite effective in its role of spotter, transport, rescue and liaison aircraft. PIN PICKUP It is bound to happen: you move something on your workbench and push your pins off the edge, spilling them all over. A broom is less than helpful. Find a magnet on your refrigerator and use it to pick the pins up quickly. Works for small screws and other hardware items just as well. I have not had much luck with plastic “foam safe” CA glues, so I came up with this technique. Apply the adhesive and then spray the kicker onto a Q-tip. When aerobatic RC aircraft designer Wayne Ulery was inspired by the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ historic first flight, he decided to pay tribute by building a 1/10-scale model. Starting in 2001, he spent a year designing and building an accurate 1/10-scale model of the Wright brothers’ 1905 Flyer, the Wright brothers’ most maneuverable design. We are often asked, “How can I make money flying a drone?” While there are many different ways to cash in using your aircraft, one that is available to new pilots in almost every city is realestate photography/videography. If you want to become the best aerobatic pilot possible, you need to master key maneuvers by taking small steps. First, make sure you’re proficient in performing maneuvers like inverted flight, vertical and horizontal rolls, inside and outside loops and stall turns. You can then perform these moves in sequence to create a show-stopping aerobatic routine.
