The original KR-21 is a beautiful Golden Age airplane with a radial engine. The Kreider-Reisner KR-21 series began in 1928 as a two-seat parasol monoplane. Later, the KR-21B was developed as a biplane trainer that was easy to fly for beginners but was also aerobatic in the hands of a more experienced pilot. This Dare kit distributed by Brodak comes nicely packaged. It’s fairly complete and includes rolled plans, 11-page instruction booklet, CD with about 100 construction photos, laser-cut balsa and plywood parts (good quality balsa), pre-cut/pre-bent wire parts, very nice vinyl decals of NC numbers, miscellaneous hardware, and vacuum-formed cowl, radial engine, and wheel covers. JOUSTER Steve Betts, Jacksonville, Florida Built from AMA plans, this high-performance sailplane has a 122-inch wingspan with an SD7032 airfoil modified at the tips. Steve hot-wired the three-piece wing at home and vacuum-bagged it with West Systems epoxy and 1/16 balsa. The Sukhoi Su-27 is a twin-engine fighter that was designed to counter the U.S. Navy’s F-14 Tomcat and the Air Force F-15 Eagle. Code named “Flanker,” it combines a heavy ordnance load, high performance, and an advanced avionics suite. FMS introduced two versions of the model, which are really the same aircraft with different color schemes. The Russian version is designated the Su-27 while the Chinese military version is designated the J-11 and has its own unique color scheme. We featured William “Bill” Jackson’s re-finished F-86 Sabre Jet in Pilot Projects a few months back, and the jet looked so amazing we had to know more details on how he achieved this “next level” look. Bill is located in Wooster, Ohio and is a retired network engineer who started flying RC in 1984, so he’s been at it for a while. A little context is in order to set the stage for the absolutely amazing job he’s done on the F-86. The Sabre Jet is a 120mm foam EDF ARF model from HSD Jets USA. CANOPY PAINTING Whenever I don’t want to deal with pilots and cockpits, I just spray-paint the clear canopies. Popular colors seem to be black, gray, silver and light blue. Trim and fit your canopy to your plane. Tape it on and drill holes for the mounting screws. Remove it and mask off the outside of the canopy starting with the perimeter. Trim the tape around the perimeter so the paint doesn’t puddle there. Spray three or four light coats to the inside. After it dries, remove the masking tape. You can then paint the rails or dress with adhesive vinyl. Note: if you use flat paint, it will show up as gloss through the canopy. In this article I will cover some of the important aspects of twin-engine airplane flight from a full-scale perspective and discuss how many of these factors affect RC pilots and how they fly their multi-engine RC model airplanes. I base these discussions on my experience as a multi-engine instructor pilot for light twin aircraft combined with type ratings in the CRJ-700 and B-777F aircraft. I have also designed and flown a twin-engine RC model airplane. The unique characteristics of twin engine aircraft require a separate FAA pilot certificate class rating and checkride. The primary focus on the differences between single and multi-engine aircraft regard engine failure procedures.
