While everyone associates the name Joe Nall with the event and sometimes the venue, Joe Nall the individual was a longtime friend of Triple Tree Aerodrome founder Pat Hartness and had a lifelong passion for all things full-scale and model aviation. Joe was the Master of Ceremonies for the Giant Scale Fly-In at Hartness Field from 1982 through 1989, keeping spectators informed and entertained until he tragically lost his life in a full-scale aircraft accident. In 1990, Pat renamed the event Joe Nall to honor his good friend. The Triple Tree Aerodrome resides in a sleepy town in the middle of South Carolina that probably doubles its population when the circus caravan of campers, RVs, and visitors roll into town. It’s equipped with a full Spektrum radio setup including an iX14 radio system and DSMX receiver and A320B servos. Alex says it’s a real floater and the clear covering looks amazing in the sun. Like the FMS 80mm Futura I reviewed a few months ago, the Integral is an electric rendition of a large, turbine-powered Tomahawk Aviation composite design. The big Integral is over 110 inches long and uses a 220-newton (50 pounds of thrust) turbine. Thankfully the FMS Integral is quite a bit easier to transport and a lot easier on the wallet! The Integral is constructed of injection molded EPO foam that is painted with a nice matte finish. Hard plastic inserts are included in various places throughout the model where enhanced strength is required. In 1979, NASA developed the HiMAT (Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology), an experimental remote control aircraft that was launched from a B-52 Stratofortress at altitude. The aircraft was flown by a pilot on the ground using a nose camera or with a 3D synthetic vision display called a “visual display”—an early version of First Person View. To make things even more exciting, there was also a TF-104G Starfighter chase plane with a set of backup controls that could take control of the HiMAT in the event that the remote pilot on the ground lost control.
