Inside a contemporary-looking building on a leafy North London high-street, textile designer Nancy Straughan is on her tea break, taking time out from printmaking to show us around her small but perfectly-formed flat. When she was little, Sarah Walsh was so obsessed with animals she wanted to be one. The solution? Sarah’s mum sewed an assortment of animal costumes for her to wear all year round. From these roots, Sarah’s creativity grew and her obsession with drawing meant she knew (or at least hoped in her heart) she would be an artist someday. During the graphic design degree she took in Albany, New York, where she grew up, her teachers opened her eyes to the world of mid-century design and typography. This, combined with her love for vintage children’s book illustration, became the foundation for a future career in the art world. MATERIALS • Red jumper • Plain cotton shirt • Matching sewing thread • Red fabric dye 01 Dye the shirt red following the manufacturer’s instructions, then leave to dry thoroughly. Once dry, press the shirt before using 02 Place the shirt on a flat surface. Use a pair of scissors to cut off the bottom of the shirt with a straight horizontal line approximately halfway down, using the image as a guide. 03 Set aside the top part of the shirt as it won’t be needed.
