Households and small businesses could be in for some much-needed energy price relief in the near future following falls in the wholesale price of electricity and gas. Throughout 2023, average wholesale electricity prices dropped by between 44% and 64% in the National Electricity Market, show the latest figures published by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). Wholesale electricity prices did edge up fractionally in Queensland and Tasmania at the tail end of the year, but they fell in NSW, South Australia and Victoria. Meanwhile, the regulator revealed that average east coast gas market spot prices dropped by 43% over the year. The amount of free office space available to rent around the country has risen again, the latest biannual Office Market Report published by the Property Council of Australia has revealed. After a rapid spike at the start of the pandemic as many workers found themselves forced to work from home, the national office vacancy rate, covering CBDs and non-CBDs, has continued to climb steadily, reaching 14.8% in January – up from 14.1% six months prior. In the capital city CBDs, vacancy rates in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney jumped the most in the six months to January; Perth was the only place where they tightened. Did you know that for every $1 that men earn in Australia, women make 87 cents? That creates a national gender pay gap of 13%. There is some good news, however. While inflation has been steadily falling since peaking in December 2022, a new analysis of fundraising data has revealed the extent to which Australians have been struggling with rising living costs. According to fundraising platform GoFundMe, there were 372 fundraisers that referred to ‘cost of living' in 2022, but that skyrocketed to 1014 cases in 2023 – a 173% increase. “In the past, the tipping point for a personal financial crisis has been a large expense such as a long-term illness. “Now, this crisis point is simply an increase in rent, an unexpected bill or one missed payday,” says GoFundMe regional director Nicola Britton. Most Australians would be interested in tapping into their superannuation to pay for advice about retirement, a new survey commissioned by Colonial First State has revealed. It found that 61% of people were receptive to the idea, with people in the 25-29 age bracket the most enthusiastic. Arecent poll conducted by people2people recruitment has revealed that many Australian workers are in favour of a more relaxed office dress code that includes wearing shorts, challenging the traditional belief that formal attire is essential for efficiency.
