I WAS STARTLED TO OVERHEAR a disgruntled volunteer in the church snap, saying, “I’m not just a warm body!” The remark surprised me, as I thought to myself, What’s wrong with being a warm body? I’m a warm body. Were all ’’just warm bodies” doing various acts of volunteer service as unto the Lord.
Though I said nothing, that heated comment stayed with me. It caused me to reflect on all the warm bodies in our congregation who serve without thought of accolades or recognition. Warm bodies who pray, encourage, prepare lessons, teach classes, arrange and rehearse music, make coffee, wash dishes, change diapers, buy toilet paper and tissue and paper cups, clean the church, weed the flower bed, paint the walls, make repairs, print the bulletins, attend planning meetings,…
