FOUNDED IN 1848, OUR TOWN, Albany, Oregon, has more than 700 historic structures—including our home. Out of respect to the original craftsmanship, the historic society encourages homeowners to retain as many of the original features as possible. Consequently, our 110-year-old historic home has no insulation, so on some wintry mornings, I indulge in a bath. As I soak in the luxurious hot water, I gaze at the skylight above.
