SPORT: It was the most spectacular Monaco G.P. in history this year—for the opening lap. Nineteen of the best went screaming through the streets of the picturesque city, with Alfa-mounted Fangio in front. Farina, on another Alfa, tried to jockey from fourth to third place on a turn, hit a puddle, skidded, and when the smoke had cleared ten cars were out of the race. This took care of most of the competition and Fangio led the procession by a full lap (just under two miles), averaged 61.33 mph for an exhausting, tortuous 100 laps.
