Quicker, faster, and more economical than its Car of the Year Forebears Four years ago, when it was a brand-new offering from GM, the Buick Riviera, with its turbocharged V-6 engine, front-drive, and torsion-bar suspension, was voted the MT Car of the Year. Though the Cadillac Eldorado and the Oldsmobile Toronado were also new that year, the Riv outshone its siblings as well as a handful of other ‘79s—including the then-new Mustang and Capri—to garner the award. En route it won the value, styling, quality, and ride categories of the competition outright, Finishing most other scoring categories in second or third spot.
The Riviera has done pretty well for Buick since then, selling between 43,000 and 50,000 units each model year, generally more than the Oldsmobile version, albeit several thousands…
