Britain’s only banked oval, Brooklands, hasn’t been raced on since 1939, but on an industrial estate within its walls, two manufacturers, Panther Cars and AC, are vying to regenerate the British sports car industry.
The Panther Solo made a premature debut in October 1984, merely whetting appetites, but by June this year, it will be production-ready, with GRP and composite bodies built by March Engineering, producers of the cars that have dominated Indy racing in recent years. The Solo has a 204-hp Ford Sierra Cosworth turbo 4-cylinder engine located ahead of the rear wheels, and is equipped with Ford’s viscous coupling 4wd and ABS.
