Named MTs ’97 Car of the Year, the virtuous Chevrolet Malibu claimed the honors over a competitive field of contenders, impressing the staff with its execution, technology, and value. Naturally, we couldn’t let one of our favorite new sedans escape duty in our long-term fleet. Faced with two engine choices—a 150-horsepower inline four and 155-horsepower V-6—we opted for the OHV six-cylinder with its additional 30 pound-feet of torque. Our trim level of choice was the feature-laden, uplevel LS, as it includes the power windows/door locks/mirrors, air conditioning, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, electronic speed control, fog lamps, 15-inch wheels, remote keyless entry system, rear defogger, and cargo net for a palatable $18,190. The standard AM/FM/cassette stereo was upgraded for $200 adding an integrated CD player to the mix.…
