General Motors’ “first true global architecture” has one basic center floorpan, with front and rear modules of varying sizes, that can accommodate six different wheelbases, says Gene Stefanyshyn, vehicle-line executive for mid-cars and mid-crossovers. With Epsilon, it’s possible to modify the width, as well, with rocker-panel changes, he says. The platform will allow l-4s, V-6s, small turbodiesels, hybrid power, and all-wheel drive.
Already underpinning the Opel/Vauxhall Vectra and Saab 93, Epsilon debuts next fall with the ’04 Chevrolet Malibu and, a few months later, the Malibu Maxx. A new Pontiac Grand Am sedan, coupe, and coupe/convertible start rolling out a year later. GM also has teased with a hatchback Saturn LS sedan replacement, a taut, rounded-looking car with short overhangs and a faster tumblehome compared with the Malibu Maxx wagon/hatch-back.…
