Nakusp, a mountain town in British Columbia, is one of the latest Canadian communities to have received a government grant to build an impressive trail network, including downhill runs, climbs, flow trails, cross-country courses and adaptive routes. It’s quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations in the region, drawing in riders from far and wide. Among them is adaptive athlete Ethan Krueger, pictured here. Tall riders rejoice! While several brands offer dropper seatposts with around 200mm of travel, the updated OneUp V2 is the new class-leader with a whopping 240mm of drop. That’s 30mm more than the original V2 post, which won our grouptest last year. Increased bushing overlap should keep it running smoothly for longer (with spare internal parts available for home servicing), while a new cartridge cap that minimises stack height – the distance from the bottom of the dropper collar to the saddle rails – makes it compatible with more frames and leg lengths than you might expect. GRIP The most important aspect of a flat pedal is how much grip it offers. A grippier pedal will give you more control over rough terrain because your feet will feel glued to the platform. The epitome of flat-pedal performance is traction akin to a clipless shoe- and-pedal combo, but with the option of being able to take your foot off without having to unclip. SHAPE A pedal’s shape is crucial in dictating its performance. Whether the platform is concave, flat or convex can affect the level of grip, while its size and form can either boost stability or totally ruin it. TECH Q&A CLICKS FOR TRICKS I’ve got a Fox 36 Performance Elite fork on my Privateer 161 and when I’m riding rocky tracks it feels harsh. The sag is set as per the chart on the fork leg and I’m running four clicks of high-speed compression damping, six clicks of low-speed compression, and five clicks of both high- and low-speed rebound. Kiwi DH racer Rob Metz (pictured) welded together his first MTB – a high-pivot protoenduro bike – in 2001, and within four years had begun to integrate gearboxes of his own design into his frames. Working with James ‘Dodzy’ Dodds, in 2011 he launched the production Zerode G1 DH bike, followed by the Voldemort trail bike in 2014. NEED TO KNOW The new Spectral 125 is a ‘downcountry’ relative of Canyon’s 150/160mm-travel Spectral trail bikes. With less bounce and less weight, it should out-manoeuvre them on climbs and around trail centres. However, with geometry, suspension kinematics and strength reminiscent of its longer-travel siblings, it should still excel on technical descents. TRAIL The horizontal distance between the front tyre’s contact patch with the ground and the point at which the steering axis (a line drawn through the centre of the head tube) meets the floor. A slacker head angle, bigger wheel size and shorter fork offset all increase trail, which means more stable steering. EFFECTIVE SEAT TUBE ANGLE The angle from horizontal of a line connecting the centre of the bottom bracket to the centre-top of the seatpost when set at pedalling height. Not all brands measure it with the saddle at the same height, and the ESA becomes slacker the higher the seatpost is extended, or if the saddle is pushed back on its rails. Choosing the best flat pedals isn’t as simple as you might think. The shape of the pedal – including its length, width and side profile, plus whether its edges are chamfered – plays a key role, as does the type, placement and number of traction pins. How bulbous the central axle housing is, plus how long the axle is and how far that positions the pedal from the crank arm, are also important. Get the mix of design elements and features right, and the result will be better grip, foot support and stability, both for diehard flat-pedal fans and more occasional users. Mountain bikers in Derby are urging the council to incorporate purpose-built off-road trails into redevelopment plans for Allestree Park, the only place in the city with terrain steep enough to accommodate gravity-fed MTB runs. Engelberg is 80km from Zurich and 116km from Bern, and easily reached by train (see www.SBB. ch) or road. Single-ply, high-tpi The thinnest MTB tyre casings are built for cross-country (XC) riding and racing. Key objectives are low weight, great acceleration and minimal rolling resistance, but they must also be able to cope with varied terrain without tearing or puncturing. Tyres with a lightweight casing like this generally have a low-profile, fast-rolling tread pattern and are usually 2.4in wide or narrower. The high thread count of a 120tpi tyre means less material overall, resulting in a lower overall weight, which is vital for all-out acceleration, but at the expense of some durability. The platform rotates around the axle thanks to bushings or bearings, which are sealed to help them last longer. PLATFORM The main body of the pedal, which houses the bearings/bushings and axle. Usually made of alloy, but plastic, nylon and composite pedals are becoming more common. To save weight and shed mud, the platform usually has large cut-outs. Wet lube Wet lube is designed for wet and dirty riding conditions. Formulated to repel water and provide a protective coating for the chain, it reduces friction and assists gear shifting. It’s applied wet and stays saturated, meaning you need to wipe off the excess before riding.
