Just like the mountain bike itself back in the ’90s, e-MTBs have now evolved to the point where the basics are sorted and designers can head off in all kinds of new directions.
‘Lightweight’ e-bikes are the latest trend – although a bike weighing north of 15kg would never normally be called ‘light’ – with the likes of Trek, Haibike, Pivot and Transition now following the lead of Specialized, Lapierre and Orbea, and sacrificing a little grunt and battery range for a more nimble ride feel. These machines aren’t cheap, though, starting from around £5,000.
