This breathtaking sculpture will surely prompt countless second and third glances from passersby in Old Naples. Made of two tons of white marble, Under a Cloudless Sky is the work of Fabio Rebora, a sculptor in Carrara, Italy—a region well known for the luminescent white marble quarried there. The pensive face serves as a peaceful entryway to the home of Selma Nettles, whose exquisite sculpture garden has long been admired in Naples. Nettles discovered Rebora through the suggestion of notable sculptor Márton Váró, who created several of her sculptures, as well as many others locally, including the massive Annunciation sculpture on the façade of the oratory at Ave Maria. Feel the Magic Robert Vickrey was one of the most notable American Magic Realism artists, as well as a great master of egg tempera painting. Works by the New York—born painter, who graduated from Yale School of Fine Arts in 1950, depicted such themes as the lost innocence of urban youth, eerie street signs, St. Vincent nuns, and bicycles and shadows. In Naples, the Harmon-Meek Gallery has shown the late Vickrey’s works since 1970, holding solo shows of his art annually. Beginning April 4, the gallery presents the “Robert Vickrey Memorial Retrospective,” featuring pieces spanning his career that were recently returned from a museum loan to the Melvin Galleries at Florida Southern College in Lakeland.
