“Word Gems Either you decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or you go out in the ocean.” —Christopher Reeve There’s something about the change of seasons, the marking of time, that seems to step up our sense of urgency. We can almost hear the tick-tock reminder to get up and get moving. Maybe it’s time to revisit that bucket list or finally take a deep dive into a passion project. This issue marks the sixth year of honoring our own version of local “super” heroes. Our “Super Men” feature places a spotlight on a handful of men who inspire us—whether it be for their creativity, bravery, philanthropy, compassion, sense of adventure, or a combination thereof. They are all standouts in our community; they don’t hesitate to…

For Marlon Wayans, comedy runs in the family. The comedian, actor, and screenwriter grew up in New York as the youngest of 10 children—many of whom are celebrities in their own right. Known for his hilarity in widely popular movies and parodies such as Scary Movie, White Chicks, and Fifty Shades of Black, Wayans also often writes and produces his own work alongside his siblings. His latest movie, Naked, about a man who gets stuck reliving the same hours before his wedding over and over again, was released in August on Netflix; his new TV sitcom, Marlon, loosely based on his own life, premiered on NBC in August as well. As part of a new stand-up tour, Wayans will appear at the Off the Hook Comedy Club (offthehookcomedy.com) September 14-16.…
NI: What major trends for women do you expect to see this season? Patel: We’re really excited about the movement [toward] empowering women. Designers were affected by what’s happening in the world today and are dressing women in what we’re calling “New Power Suiting.” The return of the suit feels fresh and directional. It’s not just your classic suit of boardroom stripes or black; there’s a lot of novelty, whether it’s brocade, printed florals, crystal, diamanté. We also love the return of the jacket. A statement jacket can really bring out your personality. It’s also a decadent and opulent season, so you’ll see incredible texture with velvet, sequin, feathers. Some of our favorite shows of the season had this maximalist approach, like Gucci, Prada, and Saint Laurent to name a…

“Our job as fashion designers is to make women happy–a foundation I keep with me every day.” What was the aha moment that made you decide to become a designer? Growing up in Buffalo and wanting to be a fashion designer was like saying you wanted to be a movie star. It wasn’t until I was in college, during a year abroad in Paris and really seeing the world, that I realized it was something I could do. Then I came back to New York for a coveted banking internship, realized that could not be my life, and decided to go for it. What is your connection to Naples? My father lives in town with his wife, Jody, and they’re big supporters. Jody secured my first private trunk show in…
