As we approach Thanksgiving and the whirlwind of the holiday season, this year we begin it with a greater-than-ever focus on gratitude. When Hurricane Irma devastated many areas of our community less than two months ago, we learned what our town was made of. Residents rallied with nonprofits to seek out those most in need and provide them with food, water, shelter, heavy lifting to clear debris, and, in several cases, demolition work for homes that were condemned or flooded. Seemingly every hour on Facebook, there were volunteer opportunities and drop-off locations posted to aid those with critical needs, from Everglades City to Immokalee. After visiting an orphanage in Belarus more than a decade ago, American painter Nick Kosciuk was struck by the abandoned children living there, quickly becoming an advocate for them through his oil paintings that capture their beauty and vulnerability. Since then, Kosciuk has taken numerous trips back to Belarus, bringing donations from his art sales to the orphanages and returning to the United States with stories of the children and hundreds of photographs he uses as reference material for his works.
