The nonalcoholic cocktail has come of age. Mocktails, as they’re frequently called, have been with us forever in various forms. They may be as basic as a Shirley Temple or as familiar as a virgin strawberry daiquiri, but the absence of booze is the common denominator. Toward the end of her life, when cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post began to plot a legacy for the palatial, 1920s Palm Beach estate she built and named Mar-a-Lago, she probably never could have predicted the circuitous and complicated route it would take. Initially, Post offered the home to the state of Florida, which refused it due to the high cost of annual maintenance. Celebrate the start of baseball season with a family trip to the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples for a peek at its newest baseball-themed traveling exhibit. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Naples orthopedic surgeon Philip Regala felt called to bring aid to the victims. He traveled to the devastated country with the Rotary Club of Naples, embarking on a life-altering experience that shed light on Haiti’s extreme lack of medical infrastructure and supplies. On his first trip, Regala conducted eight operations alongside his wife, Sue, a nurse, in a 12-bed hospital that ran on a generator with no power at night. “It was a ‘wow’ moment for me and it’s why I’m in the world of medicine—to help people,” Regala says. Lana Knapp vividly remembers her first encounter with a Bay Colony apartment she was commissioned to revitalize. The condo, located on the ninth floor of the Naples high-rise, was so dark and dated that the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mexico were barely noticeable. When Edward Banaszak retired as the medical director of respiratory services at a Wisconsin hospital in 2000, he and his wife chose Naples to start their next chapter. Little did he know that chapter would involve an opportunity to give back with a new perspective and focus. By 2003, he began volunteering at the Senior Friendship Health Center, which has been providing medical and dental care to underserved seniors in Collier County since 1985. “I originally started by saying I will give this a try for a year or so, and it suddenly turned into 15 years,” says Banaszak, a pulmonary physician. “I’ve got a talent, knowledge, and ability to help people, and here are some people who really need help.” Whether it was a homeless man suffering from severe…

During her residency as an obstetrician, Karysse Trandem felt a calling that went beyond her pull to the medical profession. It happened when she learned about the horrors of human trafficking while at a medical conference. “It cuts at the core of every human heart to hear this is going on,” she says. “I was shocked and immediately wanted to find a way to help these victims.” Trandem was so moved that she, along with two other women physicians, embarked on a medical mission trip to the brothels in Managua, Nicaragua, where they did physical exams on 1,200 victims of trafficking. “These women live in a one-room shack with a bed without blankets, just a thin mattress,” she says. “A lot of them had trauma to their neck or wrists…

Dr. Carmella Fernandez is an orthopedic and plastic surgery trained upper extremity surgeon, specializing in both non-operative and operative treatments for the hand, wrist, and elbow.
