There are so few residential options on Naples’ downtown thoroughfare, Fifth Avenue South, that the opportunity to revitalize a home does not come around very often. When it does, it’s deemed quite special. For Dwayne Bergmann, principal designer of Fort Myers–based Dwayne Bergmann Interiors, a commission to remodel a 25-year-old condominium on Fifth Avenue South presented some exciting possibilities. Just shy of 2,000 square feet, this secondfloor, two-bedroom apartment was in need of a complete renovation. Bergmann’s strategy was to infuse the space with a new attitude that was apropos to the owner’s avocation as a ballroom dancer. Though she also is a general contractor specializing in high-end buildings in Indiana, she wanted this space to reflect her more glamorous side. This classic combination of lump crabmeat and avocado appeared on the menu at Ridgway Bar & Grill (ridgwaybarandgrill.com) shortly after the restaurant opened in 2001. The preparation is simple and stresses the quality of the ingredients: The crab is bound with a lightly seasoned mayonnaise, the avocado is mashed, and the timbale is turned out on a bed of house-made gazpacho. “It’s best served with a homemade ciabatta roll so you can sop up the gazpacho,” says the restaurant’s marketing director, Caroline Ridgway. While the Special Olympics is long known for empowering athletes with intellectual disabilities, Immokalee High School teacher Kelly Stevenson says it goes far beyond that for her students. Over the past 18 years, the Ave Maria resident has been a driving force in growing the Special Olympics in Collier County (specialolympicscollier.org). Stevenson was recently honored for her efforts when she was selected among 135,000 coaches as the Special Olympics North America Coach of the Year. Long considered the love-it-or-hate-it root vegetable, beets have surreptitiously taken center stage in health and wellness circles. Aside from being a good source of B vitamins and minerals like potassium and magnesium, beets are packed with betalains and naturally occurring nitrates that may help lower blood pressure and offer protective effects against chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. According to a study published in the American Heart Association’s journal, Hypertension, high blood pressure patients who drank a cup of beet juice daily saw notable decreases in their blood pressure.
