1 Potatoes were first farmed over 7,000 years ago in the Andes mountains of South America. In the 1500s, Spanish invaders tried them and shipped them back to Europe for the first time, giving them as exotic gifts to botanists from other countries.
2 When potatoes were first planted in Europe, they only grew to the size of cherries. So farmers developed new varieties that were better suited to the colder climate. Now, there are over 5,000 types, with lots of shapes, colours and textures.
3 The world’s most expensive potato variety is La Bonnotte, which sells for up to £33 per potato! Grown surrounded by seaweed in the sandy soil of Noirmoutier island, France, the rare tattie is said to taste like lemons, salt and walnuts.
