As we head to press in September 2025, it’s hard to know what next year will look like for visitors hoping to see Grand Canyon’s iconic North Rim. Following a lightning strike in dry, summer conditions, a wildfire engulfed the canyon’s higher rim in flames, destroying pretty much everything. The historic Grand Canyon Lodge, built in 1937, was one of approximately 70 buildings lost. Others included the visitor center, gas station, a wastewater treatment plant, an administrative building, employee housing and numerous historic cabins. The North Rim Campground also burned.
Miraculously, everyone was evacuated and nobody was injured, but the North Rim closed early for the season and the fire still burns, making it unclear what visitation will look like on this side of the park next summer. One thing…
