My eldest daughter is a really keen swimmer who is more than happy to get up at 5.30am to do laps in the cold and dark – and I have no idea where it comes from. I’m a pretty bad swimmer who loves bobbing around in the ocean but can’t swim properly with my face in the water (much to my daughter’s horror!). Sitting in bed with her heart racing and fighting for every breath, Brisbane scientist Gemma Regan knew she was in a very bad way. After a nasty fall last year which left Gemma with an ankle injury, she was confined to a wheelchair for seven weeks and developed a blood clot in her right leg.
