On Aug. 27, 1979, Earl Mountbatten of Burma was murdered by the IRA (Irish Republican Army) near his holiday home in County Sligo, Ireland. An IRA member had planted a bomb on Mountbatten’s small fishing boat Shadow V and detonated it without warning.
