It’s hard to imagine a musical about the events of September 11 being anything but traumatic, however the smash hit Come From Away, which returns to Sydney’s Theatre Royal from November 5, dispels that notion completely.
“Because it’s not just about September 11, it’s about the days afterwards, and how human beings have the capacity for great kindness, even in the most stressful situations,” says actress Zoe Gertz, who stars in the show as American Airlines pilot Beverley Bass.
The musical depicts what happened when more than 30 aircraft, like Beverley’s, were diverted to a small airport in Gander, Canada, after two planes crashed into the World Trade Center. A town of just 10,000, Gander residents banded together to take care of more than 6500 visitors.
