Every spring, I plan to have a lush garden full of colourful flowers and bountiful herbs. Every spring … I fail. My house plants are sad, the parsley is hanging on for dear life, and it’s a miracle if my seedlings are still alive by summer – which is embarrassing, given I grew up in a family of gifted gardeners. This year, I am determined to make it work, and I’m going into it armed with my secret weapon: our expert landscaping columnist Charlie Albone’s helpful tips for spring gardening (page 62). Following his advice, this weekend you’ll find me in the backyard weeding, planting chilli and marigolds, and setting calendar reminders in my phone to keep them fertilised and watered as the weather heats up.
