FROM THE FIRST ISSUE TO THE LAST After 35 years and 205 issues, this will be the final printed edition of Non-Sport Update. When I wrote the “35 Years of Non-Sport Update” feature in our previous issue, I had no idea it would be the penultimate issue. Since 1990, the magazine has been there for non-sport card collectors, not only focusing on the latest releases but also highlighting vintage card series as well. For over 25 years of its history, the magazine was a family-run publication run by my family: Roxanne Toser, Marlin Toser, and myself, along with our editors and wonderful staff of freelance writers. It’s nearly 60 years—three generations, since Star Trek: The Original Series first premiered, and today fans around the world still watch those early episodes in reruns. New shows, like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, continue the legacy. There are 947 TV episodes in all, with another Trek series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, to begin in 2026. Add to this 13 theatrical films and that makes for quite an entertainment empire that Gene Roddenberry built. The stars of these shows and films are the Captains, and all of them, Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Pike, and others, depend on their bond with a trusted and capable crew. The non-sport world features enough car cards to cause a major traffic jam. Some of the cars are in complete sets like the 1954 Topps World On Wheels that show and tell the history of automobiles. A few sets focus on a specific car model like the 1994 Collect-A-Card Corvette Heritage Collection. Most, though, are found in general-themed sets and portray special cars that are important historically or help define the vehicle’s owner/driver. 1933 WORLD WIDE GUM SEA RAIDERS SETS SAIL AT $ 68,964 A complete set of 24 Sea Raiders (R124) chewing gum cards produced by World Wide Gum in 1933 sold during a Hakes Auction held on July 30, 2025. Finishing at an impressive $68,964, the set has the distinction of being the copyright set retained by World Wide Gum for patent purposes, and has been designated as such by CGC, which has individually graded each card. A permanently mounted wrapper was also part of the auction offering, which included an 18 percent buyer’s premium at auction close. The collection features Pirates and Pirate themed scenes. Blackbeard and Captain Kidd have their own cards, while other cards explore “Walking the Plank” and “Bringing Back the Loot,” among others. Essentially there are…

Most everyone knows the saying that “every dog has its day.” It has to be the most popular puppy proverb. Collectors can add that many of those dogs also have their images on non-sport cards. Since dogs are the first animal species humans domesticated, they are certainly deserving of all that cardboard commemoration. Upper Deck raised dogs on cards to new heights with its Canine Collection in 2019. The latest chapter features a 245-card digital base set plus a 100-card Puppy Variant series. And there are more than a score of insert subsets like dogs in cars and dogs acting like humans and party animals. It can take a long time to bring a set of non-sport trading cards from the initial idea to a realized final product. Gestation times of a year or two are not uncommon. Some even take longer to find their way to collectors’ hands. But with their upcoming set based on the classic film, Metropolis, NostalgiCards may have set a new record with a set approaching the 30-year mark in terms of development. Metropolis is, of course, the first feature-length science fiction movie, directed by Fritz Lang and one of the most influential films of all time. PIRATES & PRIVATEERS SERIES IV Landlubbers, seadogs and collectors alike are welcome aboard the RRParksCARDS ship for Series IV of the popular Pirates & Privateers due out by year’s end. Taking inspiration direct from the 1930s Pirate’s Picture Bubble Gum set (R109) by Philadelphia’s Gum Inc., the series was designed to provide collector accessibility given the steep prices of vintage pirate cards. All sets are listed 1) alphabetically then 2) chronologically. However, some exceptions have been made to further accommodate the reader. For instance, when it comes to recurring series, television seasons or film franchises and their sequels, all checklists will be grouped together in the same block. For example, if a reader was looking for sets devoted to James Bond or Harry Potter, they would find all sets devoted to these franchises in the same block.
