There are two 1913-S Buffalo nickels, and they are both desirable. In fact, even though the 1913-S Buffalo nickels are highly regarded, they could probably get a great deal better.
The Buffalo nickel was new in 1913. The James Earle Fraser design was replacing the Liberty Head, which had been in use since 1883. In some ways, there was an ironic twist to the first year of both designs in that both had experienced modifications.
Back in 1883, the new nickel appeared without the word “CENTS” on the reverse. It had to be added, it was said, to prevent it from being gold-plated and passed off as a $5.
