The Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES) announced its sixth set of Newman Grants, created to financially assist numismatic authors and organizations pursuing original research in American and world numismatics. Newman Grants are awarded annually on the late Eric P. Newman’s birthday and assist with direct costs of numismatic research such as travel, photography, and graphic arts services. Five awards are being made this year, touching on varied aspects of American numismatics. The 2025 Newman Grant awardees are as follows: Greg Bennick will conduct oral history interviews with prominent numismatists and will document these voices for future generations of collectors and researchers. Classic United States silver coinage has a few series that are always front and center, always in the limelight among collectors, especially when extremely high-end examples go up for sale in some auction. Fewer coins and bank notes are used in commerce than in the past, yet the U.S. Mint and Bureau of Engraving and Printing relentlessly continue to pump out more physical cash. There is a flip side to this “coin,” that being the almost ever-increasing interest of both the collecting and general public in commemorative coins. There is little question that $100 does not buy as much as it once did. It might not buy you a meal at your favorite restaurant, a trip to see your favorite sports team, or tickets to that concert you want to see. Rare coins are no exception. For $100, you can barely put a dent in the new issues of any given year just from the United States. Rare coins make that sum seem even smaller. At the present time, the issuing of commemorative coins has become almost commonplace, with numerous groups asking for a special coin honoring their projects. The idea is, of course, to get money for their cause by requiring the avid collector to pay a surcharge for the privilege of owning the coin in question; these pieces are not really coins in the true sense of the word, but the government says otherwise, and they are therefore collectible. Edward Howland Robinson Green is well known in the coin hobby for his fabulous collection, which once included all five of the 1913 Liberty Head nickels, his lavish lifestyle, and the eccentric past of his mother, Hetty Green. I am unsure if the detection is better, but there are many counterfeit coins out there to be purchased online. I know someone who purchased a Morgan Carson City fake. I noticed immediately that there were no markings on the face. None. It was pristine. He purchased it for $24.95 and wants to have the website shut down. He said they are even making fake coin holders with NGC and PCGS that are identical to the eye. This needs to be stopped. Returning from the ANA National Money Show in Atlanta as the calendar turned from February to March, I had the misfortune to have my left leg come up quite lame.
