Sometimes, when collecting tokens, it can be difficult to determine where they came from. Collectors colorfully term these unidentified pieces as mavericks. Rev. John Coffee Jr., an authority on transportation tokens, told an interesting tale of one such piece that took decades to establish its origin. One reason for the ongoing popularity of one-cent pieces with the collecting public is the continuous changes undergone by this denomination since the first coinage in late February 1793. One of these special events came at a time when cents struck by the Philadelphia Mint simply ceased to circulate, forcing a change in alloy. It all began in the late 1840s with the supply of copper. Prior to 1849, the price of copper in this country had been fairly stable, and the Mint was able to make decent annual profits from the copper coinage; these sums helped offset other expenses. The discovery of gold in California, however, upset the delicate monetary system of this country, forcing the price of copper upwards. In 1851, the Mint actually lost money on occasion…

Up, up, and away is not really an appropriate description for the bullion coin market, but due to significant appreciation in not only the spot price of gold but silver as well, the dynamics of much of the market are positive. Gold has been on a tear for some time, the spot price reaching new all-time records, then backing off only modestly. The Carson City branch mint produced its first dime in 1871. Silver mining was huge in this area, so the tiny amount of silver in dimes didn’t turn heads. Everyone is looking for a sleeper.
