This past month, we have added over 300 new coin issues to NumisMaster. Updated includes 2025 coins from Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Latvia, Liberia, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Peru. At the end of September 2025, we ran our metals updates, which resulted in price changes for gold and silver. This updated over 30,000 pricing fields and the melt prices of each coin on the website that consists these metals. While the values for gold and silver bullion-based coins were being revised, we continued working on some special projects that were inspired by the observations of our subscribers. In the last month, we have added the American Eagle silver proof with the Navy privy mark and the next edition in the Comic Art series, this time featuring Batman. There are also a few coins that jumped quite a bit. The 2025-S proof silver eagle, which had just been released in the last report, jumped from over 3,500 to nearly 110,000 in the last month. With the edition of the Batman coin and medals, the Superman 1-ounce silver medal went from just under 15,000 to over 28,600. Silver coins of 1853–1855 with arrows and rays have long fascinated numismatists, but in the early days of collecting, this was not true. These coins were so common in the late 1850s that few people thought of saving high-grade specimens for posterity. At the present time, we tend to think that the arrows and rays coinage was just something that happened on the spur of the moment, but in reality, a long historical process was involved. We have been keeping an eye on the price of gold for all of 2025, simply because the numbers seem to be bouncing around more rapidly than a ping pong ball served up by Olympic players. With the supply of silver dollars low in the early 1960s, the casinos in Nevada turned to dollar-sized tokens. Laurence Griffin’s article, “Cartwheels…Nevada Style,” in the June 1966 issue of Coins showed many examples of these silver dollar substitutes. “In the early part of 1963, Nevada casino operators suddenly realized that they were facing a crisis,” Griffin wrote. “The supply of silver dollars had shrunk drastically. Nickels receive little coverage in the numismatic press, and you’re not likely to see large gatherings of Jefferson nickel collectors at coin conventions or hear of new record prices for nickel dates at auctions. Since the Jefferson nickel was introduced, there have been some glorious moments. The 1950-D was popular in the 1950s, but it reached its top price and plateaued. An uncirculated 1950-D was $6 in the 1960s, and an MS-60 sits at $6.50 today. An uncirculated roll was $250-$300 in the 1960s and $280 today. Over the years, a few dates have done a bit better, especially in top grades. The 1939-D has slowly moved to $60 in MS-65, and the 1939-S is $30 in that grade. The story of the Benjamin Franklin half dollar began in France with two men: American statesman Benjamin Franklin and French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. If Franklin did not travel to Paris in 1776 to enlist French support for the American War of Independence, then the Ben Franklin half dollar would not exist in the form it does today. That is because when he was in Paris, renowned sculptor Houdon crafted the bust of the elder statesman.
