He became Chief Justice of the United States in 1921. The obverse depicts the former president with the inscription “WILLIAM H. Fact Checking As you know, I am employed by ICG. It’s a fact that the news we get from our various TV, print, and online sources affects what we believe to be true. This holds true for our numismatic sources. The internet, especially, is filled with both true, factual information along with misinformation. Numismatic print media is more reliable. As a columnist myself, I am extremely careful about what I write. I don’t write about subjects I am ignorant about, as misinformation can foster both myths and disputes. Any conscious omission of facts also leads to ignorance, so I believe columnists should seek to inform their readers with the full story. Most non-collectors today have seen the nickel in daily use for so long that they tend to think it has always been with us. This is not the case, of course, as the public has used the copper-nickel five-cent piece only since the early summer of 1866. Oddly enough, however, the five-cent denomination was with us long before 1866, and the common name of “nickel” was used for two earlier coins. The story began in the 1790s. The mint law passed by Congress in April 1792 provided for several silver coins, in denominations ranging from five cents to a dollar. Many numismatists have the experience of selling or trading part of their collection. In some instances, the collector might be upgrading a piece and no longer needs a duplicate. Other times, the need for cash flow forced the sale of part or all of a collection. Liquidating part or all of a numismatic collection is not as simple as withdrawing funds from a financial account. The amount you will be paid depends on when you sell and on the kind of material you have, the manner in which you sell it, and the time it might take to finally be paid, such as when something is consigned to sell in a future auction. The July 1966 issue of Coins magazine heralded a change. For one thing, the publication expanded from the prior issue’s 68 pages to 100 pages. New columnists appeared, and sections of the magazine were expanded. Coins may be about to go through what I will carefully word as an adjustment period. Several high-profile rarities sold for what on the surface appear to be great prices. Published prices indicate these prices are lower than what had been suggested prior to these sales. Could it be that someone got a bargain, or is the market for high-end rarities beginning to soften? The rapid appreciation in the spot price of gold, silver, and platinum drove the value of bullion as well as common coins, whose value is impacted by their intrinsic value, to levels never seen before.
