WHEN hot rod clubs were first formed in New Zealand they took their lead from their American counterparts in many ways.
Remembering that the earliest hot rodders were somewhat gang-like in their groupings, many USA clubs at local and regional levels had distinctive and colourful names, e.g., Oilers, Phantoms, Warlords, Torquers, Sons of Satan (based in Morman dominated Utah of all places!), Sultans, Prowlers and the Pharaohs popularised in the American Graffiti movie.
Whilst some of our clubs replicated their American peers (e.g., Rodbenders, Tornados, Road Knights), most tended to take on regional names and features depicting their locations (Marineland, Pukekohe, East Bays, Nelson, etc). Hot rodders of the era were effectively the boy racers of today and often didn’t enjoy a good reputation with the community or the police.…
