In November last year, Kaikoura was rattled by several large earthquakes that caused widespread damage, not only within the seaside community but also north and south along State Highway 1 (SH1) and the main trunk line. Much of the highway was covered by massive slips that cut the town off for several weeks. Until the inland road was cleared, the only way in was by sea or air. THE OFF-ROAD COBRA The Ford F150 Raptor is the car of our childhood dreams — built tough enough to crush anything in its path and with enough power to make us want to try it. Now, the team at Shelby American has made the Raptor even more appealing, launching what it’s dubbed the ‘Baja Raptor’. As you’d expect with cars wearing the Shelby name, these have been upgraded in every aspect, and now produce 525hp and 610lb·ft of torque from the turbocharged V6. The event is in safe hands, though, as both Terry and Bruce are devout petrolheads with a large collection of cars between them, as well as an extensive background in business operations and management, media, marketing, and television and video production. The modus operandi for CRC Speedshow 2018 does not look to be a radical departure from the show as we know it, but, rather, a continuance of the show’s successes. Registration for the event has now closed. About 160 Mustangs are expected to take part, with models ranging from 1964 to 2017, and with an estimated total power figure somewhere north of 50,000hp. The cars will begin with an open-track session at Highlands Motorsport Park on the Thursday, before heading to Invercargill. One of the great misconceptions surrounding American vehicle imports is to do with the necessity of converting the driving position from the left to the right. While many of the vehicles featured in NZV8 are permitted to be kept left-hand drive, on account of meeting certain criteria — most often due to age and gross vehicle mass — there are a great many vehicles that, by law, must be converted to right-hand drive to be driven legally on New Zealand roads. The very term ‘right-hand-drive conversion’ carries a negative association. BOOTE IT Craig Boote’s no stranger to racing high-power V8s, but the ’69 Mustang that he’s currently having built will be the most impressive yet. The former Super Stock champ has enlisted the help of Palmerston North’s Octane Automotive to turn a rusty ’69 Mustang into a Group 1 front runner. All fabrication work has been completed in house at Octane, including notching the strut towers to allow the 400-cube engine to slot in. The Marsh Motorsport–built engine produced an impressive 854hp and 646ft·lb of torque on the engine dyno, and is now backed by a Hollinger five-speed gearbox.
