The club has explained that health-and-safety constraints that come into place when the public is involved, and the increasing attendance at the event, which has caused issues with traffic and congestion, mean that the show isn’t viable in its current format. While an unfortunate loss to the event calendar, it is good news that the NZHRA rod run that takes place on the Friday night and Saturday prior is still going ahead between 1 and 3 May. Entries…

Mike Clark likes his Mopars. He’s owned too many to list over the years and doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty making them more to his taste in the process. Spring has come early to the south, with sunny skies bringing out record numbers for this year’s Conrodders Rod and Custom Club’s Memorial Run in Dunedin on 18 August. As the event is held wet or fine, organizers were more concerned about fine-tuning the catering numbers for this event than the weather. “We got very lucky with the weather. When everyone started arriving at the club rooms in Green Island, [the numbers] well exceeded my expectations. I had to do a panic phone call to the people at the cafe at Sunnyvale to let them know we had a much bigger crowd coming,” club vice president Kevin Naylor says. But, for next season, they’ll be on track with something different: a Ford Maverick door car. Tony loves the idea behind the Wild Bunch class. There was once a time when the V8 crowd and the import crowd could barely share a car park without some form of altercation taking place as blind passions took over. It’s that time of year — chances are that quite a few of you readers will have recently had to dig deep and fork out a pile of hard-earned to the IRD. You’d rather flee the police than try to escape the long arm of the taxman. One year, when John Fenton needed to come up with a large sum in a short time, he did what he had to do and sold his nearly complete ‘Road Hog’ to get there. Quite a few years after that sour experience, John was on the turps with his late brother’s mate Marlon Galloway, and conversation moved to the Model A that John owned before buying the Road Hog. “I said I would like to build another pre-’49 car one day,” John recalls.…

ROUNDSEVEN RESHUFFLE The event planned to host round seven of the 2019–2020 series has changed, so the committee has been looking into different options. Just before we went to print it was confirmed that the club will attend the April 2020 Supercars meet at Pukekohe. At this stage, there’s not much info available about the event, but it’s set to take place on the weekend of 24–26 April 2020. Part of the meeting falls on Anzac Day, Saturday, 25 April, so racing will not be allowed to start until after 1pm that day. So, it looks like this may be the only season in which the Central Muscle Cars (CMC) takes in two Supercars rounds, with the first round of the season also being the coming Supercars round at Pukekohe…

Being a Mopar fan isn’t easy. For starters, there’s generally fewer of them around than there are cars from GM or Ford, and with that comes fewer aftermarket parts and less support. Those in the know call the resulting exorbitant prices asked for decent Mopar cars or parts ‘Mopar tax’. To say the weather hadn’t played ball for the weeks leading up to the Palmerston North Hot Rod Club’s (PNHRC) major annual event, the Palmy Swap Meet, would have been an understatement. When does a car become damaged beyond repair? Even if it can be repaired, there’s always the good old ‘she’ll never be the same again’ myth to contend with. In my opinion, this is a completely flawed statement; cars are made by men and machines, so they can be thoroughly repaired by men and machines. Rather than writing off the whole industry, it’s important to realize that a poorly repaired vehicle can normally be isolated to a bad repairer. Arguably, if you have the inclination combined with the right skill set and factory specifications, you could responsibly assemble a car one panel at a time.
