A trio of shout-outs to car clubs doing good work Courtesy of the Moon Car club, based in St. Louis, Mo., nine Moon cars were among the featured exhibits at the recent Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance in Malvern, Pa. The club caught a good degree of attention by marking the event with all four brands made by the company (Moon, Diana, Windsor, Ruxton). Country Squire memories I recently read the discussion on 1955 and 1956 Fords following Angelo Van Bogart’s editorial on those cars. My parents let me and my twin brother use their 1955 Ford Country Squire wagon. Our other car was a 1958 Buick Century that we were not allowed to use for dates. So we got the old car. It was dependable until the end, when rust got to it. We lived in Oshkosh, Wis., and therefore cars were prone to rust. But the Country Squire was a great car. My parents even took us to see “Psycho” at the 44 Outdoor theater in Oshkosh. We had to move up to the middle seat, because we couldn’t see the screen from the third seat. David P. Steve Isola found this 1948 Ford tow truck with a 1941 Plymouth sedan hooked to it outside East Side Auto in Milaca, Minn. “Were they found together? When was the last time the tow truck was in use? How long have they been parked on display?” Isola wonders. “Are either of them restorable? My understanding is they are both for sale as complete vehicles and not being parted out. The tow company name on the side of this truck has been rendered unreadable with the ravages of the elements. Obviously, the tow company that owned the truck was part of the AAA auto club network. AAA was established in 1902 in Chicago. By 1907, Minnesota established its own regional club. AAA started emergency roadside service in 1915.”…

In its early years in the United States, Volkswagen brought a lighthearted, humorous tone to its Beetle advertising. Those ads featured witty taglines, simple-yet-impactful layouts and clever sales copy that showcased the brand’s good-natured approach to marketing its diminutive car. Print ads emphasized the Beetle’s enduring configuration, noting that throughout its long production run, “was kept ahead of its time, and never out of date.” Another ad contained 15 profile views of the VW from 1949 through 1963 to demonstrate the model’s “never changing” design over the years. An example of the practicality of VW’s interchangeable parts was underscored on the featured Foster & Kleiser billboard. Pat Sharkey, of Fulton, N.Y., has owned his 1913 Overland for about five years. “I have other cars and have always wanted a brass era automobile,” he says. “I had looked at a 1910 Overland roadster and went to talk to a friend to see if he had any knowledge of the roadster. He told me he did know the car and it was a nice, solid vehicle. However, a friend of his was thinking of selling a 1913 Overland touring car and he thought it might be a better car for me... Just a day before Christmas Eve 1967, a 1962 Chrysler New Yorker and 1951 Packard 200 sedan collided, certainly marring the holiday for the owners of these two big four-doors. The Packard looks to have struck a separate obstacle not visible in the photograph. Given its age, and its front and rear end damage, the Packard was likely sent off to the scrapyard in the sky, but the newer Chrysler four-door hardtop may have been repaired to see another day on the road. Note the “Square ’Bird” and Comet coupe behind the Packard, and the 1964 Olds station wagon behind the Chrysler. Q. I have a question regarding the addition of an auxiliary electric fuel pump to an older vehicle. I have read that some folks place the electric pump in SERIES with the mechanical pump, while others say to place the electric pump in PARALLEL with the mechanical pump.
