January 10, 2013, was a “monumental” day for the California national monument known as Pinnacles when it formally became this country’s 59th national park. Pinnacles National Monument was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. The park was created for the vision and preservation of local homesteaders and later was developed by a group of residents living in the area who went by the name “Pinnacle Boys.” What today is Pinnacles National Park has grown physically since that first inception to its present size of about 26,000 acres in the southern portion of the Gabilan Mountains. The park hosts between 350,000-400,000 visitors per year, many from Europe and Asia. My wife and I fell in love with Maine more than 15 years ago while visiting her brother and his wife. They had bought and renovated a small cottage in Southwest Harbor near Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. The area is rich in opportunities for beautiful landscape photography. Summer and early fall are our favorite times to explore, but these can be the most crowded times due to the park’s popularity. Southwest Harbor and other surrounding villages are called the quiet side of the island. There you can easily spend the best part of your days hiking, biking, kayaking and honing your photography skills away from the more congested areas. Regarding our national parks, historian Wallace Stegner famously declared them, “…the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.” One can argue whether the parks are the “best” idea to come from American history, but they’re undeniably something of which we can all be proud and are fortunate to be able to enjoy collectively. Today, according to the National Park Service, “the system includes 419 areas covering more than 85 million acres.” In 2019, the parks recorded well over 300 million visits. Light on the Landscape is a collection of photographs and my writings on landscape photography, a curated set of 60 essays taken from my “On Landscape” column for Outdoor Photographer magazine. I began writing for this magazine in 1986, and in 1997, we launched the column. In these essays, I share my thoughts on all aspects of the landscape genre.
