SUPER TELE PRIMES FOR CANON EOS R Canon introduced two new super telephoto primes ideal for wildlife and sports photographers, the RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM and RF1200mm F8 L IS USM. The latter is the longest lens yet for Canon’s EOS R mirrorless system, and both lenses are compatible with Canon’s RF1.4x and RF2x extenders for extreme telephoto reach up to an incredible 2400mm with the RF1200mm F8 L IS USM and RF2x extender. The RF800mm F5.6 L IS USM has a minimum focusing distance of 8.53 feet. Built-in image stabilization provides up to 4.5 stops of correction. I’ve been fortunate to travel to some of the most beautiful places and to photograph some of the world’s most exquisite creatures, and I’ve come to know that a beautiful subject doesn’t necessarily translate to a beautiful photograph. These experiences have taught me quite a bit about my role in picture-making and in managing my expectations. I want to create photographs that aren’t simply mugshots of animals. Creating expressive wildlife images requires more than using my biggest lens, waiting for wildlife to show up and pressing the shutter. Lean On Me “I had spent a few days working with this young family on the forested edge of Kurile Lake in Russia’s remote Kamchatka Peninsula,” recalls Andy Parkinson. “This young cub and his sibling would spend their days playing, climbing trees and generally doing all that they could to disturb their mother’s patient attempts at fishing. Location Nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific” due to its multi-colored canyon walls etched deeply into the terrain, Waimea Canyon on the south shore of the “Garden Island” of Kaua’i was formed when the Waimea River carved its way through the lava and basalt formations of the region. Waimea is Hawaiian for “reddish water.” Driving through the canyon takes you through both Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Parks. In recent years, national parks and other popular nature photography destinations have become increasingly crowded and potentially frustrating, with some even requiring reservations. With so many photographers crowding the parking lots and trailheads, perhaps it is time to skip those roadside locations and head deeper into the wilderness for a backpacking-based photography adventure. Having worked as a backpacking guide as well as a photo guide, I would say my favorite photos are the ones I have worked the hardest to get. While backpacking isn’t for everyone, it is far more attainable than most people think.
