Hello, January! The first days of the new year, following a cozy and love-filled period of celebrating with the people closest to me, always come in with a blast of energy. Back-to-back deadlines? One of West Palm Beach’s most popular locally owned eateries has found a new home in Delray Beach. Tropical Smokehouse, chef Rick Mace’s ode to Florida barbecue, recently opened along Atlantic Avenue. It is the latest venture from Mace and his business partner, Jason Lakow, who together operate the original Tropical Smokehouse on South Dixie Highway as well as Tropical BBQ Market and the adjacent Juicy Cocktail Bar in downtown West Palm. Its formation was a direct response to the fluidity of the Art Nouveau period and the austerity that immediately followed World War I. Art Deco made its grand entrance onto the global stage at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, and the style quickly spread internationally, influencing everything from the Manhattan skyline to luxury ocean liners steaming across the Atlantic. What inspired you to look to midcentury minimalist painter Leon Polk Smith for the Spring 2026 collection? The spark came when I encountered Smith’s paravent at his 2023 show at Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich. I thought I knew his minimal language, but Seven Involvements in One shifted my perception. It held the room with pulse and bravado, far from anything minimal. How did his artwork influence the designs of the collection? His work made me ask: how far can the pulse of two colors and a line carry a shape? It inspired me to see a garment with the same clarity—simple, direct, built from a grid of lines and colors.
